Partners with
Community Corrections
Parsons,
Kansas – Labette Center for Mental Health Services (LCMHS) has accepted a
contract with the11th Judicial District Community Corrections which will
allow the Center to create a new case management position. This position will employee a case manager
who will work with Community Corrections to aid in the goal of providing
treatment to those individuals who are in need of both behavioral health care
and Community Corrections supervision.
The
funding for this added position to Labette Center has been made possible by money
awarded through a state program grant created to support the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (HB2170). During a statewide examination conducted by
the Council of State Government Justice Center, it was determined, among other
programs, funding would be provided to Community Corrections agencies
throughout the state to assist in the behavioral health needs of the
individuals for which they serve. In Labette County, the 11th
Judicial District determined there to be a significant need for these
individuals to have a steady contact between Labette Center and Community Corrections. This new position will help individuals reach
the necessary goals to work toward completing their requirements in these
programs. Through this funding, and
ultimately the creation of this new position, there is a hope of “filling the
gap” for individuals who are served in both the community corrections and
mental health fields.
“This venture is an exciting project that will provide a
needed service to those clients that both we and Community Corrections serve,”
stated Matthew Atteberry, Executive Director. “We are looking forward to
exploring this process and working with Community Corrections.”
This Case Management position will provide care
coordination to individuals that have mental health and/or substance use
disorders and have been assigned to 11th Judicial District Community
Corrections for community supervision. This new staff position will provide
support to those individuals in making arrangements for care and working with
community corrections staff to connect to necessary services in the community. This position will provide support to ensure
that individuals have access to mental health treatment by serving as a liaison
between LCMHS and Community Corrections in setting up treatment, providing
short-term case management, skills building, outreach, and in the needed
treatment programs. The goal of this
program is to help implement a self-sustainment of being a productive member of
the community by learning and improving on coping skills and identifying
resources for independence in work, home and education.
Misti
Mustain, Director of Clinical Services, stated, “We
hope that, through this program, we are able to work together and address
issues that may create barriers in a timely and effective manner for offenders
receiving mental health or substance use treatment.”
